Isabela Barrera Leal

Hometown: Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico

Major: Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering

Hobbies: I enjoy drawing, baking sweet treats, teaching and studying Olympiad mathematics, spending time with friends, and taking care of my pets. I especially love reading Latin American magical realism, which is one of my favorite literary genres.

Future Goals: For my future, I want to use computer science, data science and AI to develop technologies that make a positive and ethical impact on people’s lives. At Penn, I plan to explore how engineering can be used to address environmental challenges, particularly by improving energy efficiency in computing systems. I also hope to explore the economic applications of computer science through quantitative finance, where I can apply the mathematical reasoning I developed during my participation in math olympiads to identify patterns, create algorithms and build predictive models.
